The small microclimate conference was fun! It was my first conference and I'm super grateful my supervisor signed me up for it, it's so cool and useful to see what sort of research other people are doing and how they're presenting it.

It started out amazingly when the person I happened to sit next to for the welcome speech greeted me, asked me about my project and revealed that bryophytes are his favourite group of organisms. Turns out he's a huge bryophyte lover from Sweden and I've actually come across his papers when I've been going over the literature! Then during the poster session, there were people who came to our poster specifically to talk about bryophytes which felt really good, since they're only a small part of our group's research otherwise. Yet, there's so much interested in them, and I got to reply to questions about what sort of methodology to use, which was neat.

I also met another student there who I've been in touch with through email, thanks to my supervisor talking to her supervisor and realizing we were both working on bryophyte photosynthesis and setting us up for some email correspondence earlier in the summer. She was really nice. Then I also met an old colleague from the autumn survey, who I remember well for a change, because she was a bit chaotic but super endearing. I talked to her a lot and it was cool to realize how I do actually have a wide network of contacts, and how I keep expanding it!

The conference was also tough because I'm not used to getting up that early and the days were long and PACKED with new information, so I'm glad it's over. I'm also glad I pushed to get my measurements done earlier in the week, so I get tomorrow mostly off, because I'll be working again on Saturday.

literally could not tell you the last time I saw a movie in theaters. I think it was pre pandemic? Truly do not know. I’m hardly much of a movie person anyway, they’re too damn long anymore. I like being able to be at home and pause them when I get too restless.

for work days, dress pants and a nice top, often button ups or nice sweaters in winter. out of work, jeans and tshirts mostly. sometimes when I’m feeling it I’ll wear skirts, because I love skirts, but I have to be in the mood.

Child me wanted to be a biologist, then an artist, then a vet, and late teenage me wanted to be a psychology researcher. so not at all LOL. One day I might like to go to school again for biology/botany, but that’s a long way from now if ever. Right now I’m happy where I am in tech support.

Yep, been married for 7.5 years (and in a relationship with him since we were 14, which is essentially half our lives, which is… wild, to say the least. I got rly lucky on that front lol)

Good at: fixing computers/technology in general, baking, problem solving in general. Bad at: making friends and keeping my house clean

Both!! I only have cats right now but I still one day would like a dog. I don’t know if we’ll be able to with our current cats though because Mist is scared of dogs and idk if it’d be fair to him. I really want a shepherd or cattle dog or corgi though, herding dogs are my favorites. Or a rottweiler mix because I adored the rottie mix I grew up with.

What’s something you’d like to create content for?

Uuuuuuhhhhhh Zelda maybe? I’d still love to make a good Zelda and Link cosplay for myself one day. Or Cosmere, that’s my other big all consuming interest. I don’t really do art though or fanfic writing or anything so.

At the moment, Zelda lol. I’ve been replaying breath of the wild to manage my obsession and excitement wrt tears of the kingdom

What’s something you were excited about that turned out to be disappointing this year?

We essentially got no snow and I’m still mad about it. My last hope is we get a freak snow storm in March again like we did last year.

25. My idea of a perfect date

Tying back to the ocean, I actually adored the idea of becoming a marine biologist! I grew up in California and was almost ALWAYS in the water, so the idea of that being my job??? Yes please? But life got very...bad, so I gave up on my dream for a little while and wanted to do something more familiar which was...singing! Because I’m good at it and I know how to play guitar so why not, right????

first fell in love with the ocean when his family went on a trip to jeju when he was eight

they were walking around the coast and seok absolutely?? was just mesmerized with the way the waves crashed against the ocean,, the beautiful tones of blue in the waves,, his big eyes peering into the water to look at the little fish swimming around ugh so precious

literally begged his parents to let him take swimming lessons as soon as he got home

and that was the start of a beautiful perfect pair: seokmin and the ocean

at first he wanted to be a marine biologist, but after a seventh grade field trip to the aquarium and seeing one of the scuba divers in the tanks with the fish, he changed his mind -- he wanted to do that!!

luckily one of his friends seungkwan, who was a sloth cuddler at the zoo, mentioned that there was an opening for a dolphin keeper position!

seokmin at the interview: “wanna see my seal impression?”

at first he was a little nervous since he had no experience whatsoever,, accidentally tripped on the fish bucket when first meeting the dolphins

but once he met gyul and podo? literal heart eyes

as soon as he saw them,, immediately wanted to get into the pool and swim with them

“seokmin wait you don’t have proper gear on” “it’s fine!! i’m willing to take the risk!!”

can you imagine him in a blue wetsuit, yellow fishing type overalls with a cute lil dolphin patch in the middle!! i’m sad

turns out, seokmin is really good with dolphins the same way he’s great with people!!

podo is absolutely enthralled with seok.. she thinks he’s soooo handsome!! always squeaks when he comes into the pool~

gyul gets a little jealous,, but he doesn’t mind since seok always sneaks him extra squid snacks

they’re his actual children, literally seokmin walking into the pool room: “where are my babies~~”

does demonstrations for elementary school kids!! he teaches them how to “speak gyul and podo’s language” and also gives a presentation on how to reduce plastic waste

honestly really cute, super endearing seeing seok and a bunch of eight year olds squeaking with the dolphins

has a bunch of drawings of him and the dolphins hung up on his fridge back home,, he always gets them in his work mailbox as thank you notes!!

okay but listen,, as great as he is with children and dolphins alike,, seokmin wasn’t necessarily the.. most careful keeper at the zoo..

to be honest, everyone was a little worried at how clumsy seok was,, but they realized how much the dolphins loved him and so they just kinda deal with it

accidentally slipped and fell into the pool while trying to get one of podo’s toys,,,, it’s fine

you, on the other hand, just recently graduated from vet school, and having interned at the zoo for years now, they offered you a job right away

you watched a ton of animal documentaries growing up!! and honestly, going to the zoo was one of your favorite things to do as a kid,,

so it was no surprise that your dream was to work with animals!! but you’ve always had a soft spot for marine life :(

your first encounter with seokmin was super brief, when you had stopped by the break room to buy some coffee,, he was soaked.. bunches of paper towels in his hands,,

poor kid was trying to dry himself with paper towels and so naturally you just offered some help

seok didn’t even notice you come in!! but when he looked over to see whose voice it was,, perhaps his heart skipped a beat or two,,

“i’m okay, don’t worry! it’s just.. i fell into the pool again and i also forgot to do the laundry so we don’t have any towels..” he rambled, his ears burning a shade of tomato red

“i’m sure we have extra towels at the clinic? and i think the others would like it if there wasn’t a huge puddle of water in the break room,,” you giggled, seok shooting you a confused look

“you work at the clinic?” “yeah, i’m the new vet”

and literally seokmin drops his paper towels and palms his forehead bc,, how tf he gonna look so STUPID in front of the new vet

also since when has the new vet been so cute?

and so that’s how seok ends up in your office for the first time, cracking stingray jokes and drying out his hair while you’re sitting on top of your desk, laughing at the very cute but clumsy dolphin keeper

you don’t really see seokmin all that much for a while, since there was a pretty bad infection going around the seals, you dedicated your time to them

but to be honest seokmin can’t get you out of his head,, he keeps thinking about the cute vet that laughs at his jokes

one day seok asks you to come to the dolphin exhibit because gyul isn’t acting like his normal self and he was absolutely worried,, ran straight to your office

turns out poor baby has indigestion :(

the reason? seok tripped when he was feeding them and the whole bucket of herrings fell straight into the pool

you, jaw dropped to the floor: “are you being serious”

seokmin: “yes listen i’m really sorry okay i tried to stop him from eating all of them but he’s just.. too fast”

you can’t help but laugh at how,, silly seokmin is!! literally the kid has a heart of gold but also legs made out of jello

the two of you are just in the pool, gyul is nuzzling you as you rub his belly,, podo is circling seokmin nervously,, he has to calm her down poor baby girl :(

but you figure out the problem, gyul just has to take some meds and go on a strict diet for the next two weeks!!

you offer to stop by everyday to check up on gyul,, in case seok needs help taking care of him or anything

gyul starts to grow super fond of you,, squeaking and swimming to the edge of the pool every time you walk into the room!!

but podo doesn’t like you bc she thinks you’re too close to her favorite keeper

even if you give her squid snacks,, she won’t eat them unless seok gives them to her

you’re a little bummed by it, but you know not every animal is going to fall in love with you,, it is a little hard though, especially if you’re the one responsible for their health

two weeks pass and gyul is all better, but podo is still a bit aggressive towards you,,

seokmin’s new mission: getting podo to like you!!

him: “have you thought about dressing as a clown? she’d find it funny”

you: “what”

him: “ok i guess we’ll move onto plan b?”

honestly it’s really cute it’s kind of like he’s trying to convince his little sister that his significant other isn’t a bad person

you and seokmin spend the next couple of days,, coming up with a plan in the break room during lunch

the two of you finding out more about each other along the way, sharing your love for the ocean and marine life!!

seokmin finally gets the courage to ask for your number,, the first text you get from him is a photo of him and gyul in the pool :(

you make it routine to send him cute photos of seals and otters,, he sends you penguin memes probably

your coworkers would start to notice,, teasing you while you’re doing paperwork in your office,, nurses “i see you spending time with that cute dolphin keeper,, when’s the wedding?”

they’d tease you even more once they saw how red your cheeks would get,, because honestly, the more time you spent with seokmin, the more you realized that not only is he handsome, but he has the purest heart in the world

even if he is.. a little clumsy.. and forgetful.. he puts the animals before himself and you love that about him!!

so for the next few days,, while seokmin was on his lunch break, you’d hop into the pool and hang out with the dolphins for a little bit!!

gyul was so happy to see you again,, but podo distanced herself a bit from you,, staying in the corner of the pool until seokmin came back

until one day,, gyul was in a different pool for training, and it was just you and podo,,

and you figured,, might as well try one more time,, holding out her favorite squid snack

slowly but surely,, podo came to you, taking the squid snack,, even letting you pat her head!!

you were absolutely over the moon, because after months of hostility,, this was the first time podo had ever let you pet her,,

as soon as seok came back from his break,, you threw your arms around his neck,, telling him that the plan worked!! and even though she wasn’t in love with you yet,, this was a start and progress should be celebrated regardless of how big or small

seok’s face is literally tomato red at this point but thank god you can’t see it,,

Riot Fest 2017

Feel free to scroll on by this post. This is mostly for me since I have a terrible memory and would like to remember this weekend. I actually wrote about a Warped Tour in my Xanga ages ago (oh god just typing that makes me feel old) and when I read it a few years later, I was surprised by how little I remembered. 

Friday

I actually had work early Friday morning. After work I took an anxiety nap and got ready for the aftershow. I was super nervous about navigating the city late at night since I’m just a sheltered suburban child, but Lyft made it easier. Even though taking Lyft eased my anxiety a little bit, I was REALLY anxious during Radar State. I tried to focus, and they were pretty good. I’m definitely gonna have to check out more of their stuff. I already wrote a little about Bayside on Friday night, but I’ll add a little more. They just always put on a really solid live show. The setlist was great, and even though I was a little confused by the fact that they played so many from The Walking Wounded, I was happy they did because it kept the energy up and it meant less from Shudder lol. You can always find me near the front during Bayside singing along with a big ass grin on my face.

The train ride home was super entertaining as there was a drunk wedding party who lost the bride. I guess she drunkenly got on the wrong train. Hope she made it home okay.

Saturday (My birthday!)

I barely wanted to get out of bed Saturday lol, and I didn’t even do much the day before! Got up, drank coffee (not enough), did birthday cake for breakfast and presents. I started getting ready a little too late and almost missed the train. Thankfully it was also running a few minutes late. I already don’t really remember much from early Saturday. I do remember thinking that The Smith Street Band was Knuckle Puck and being REALLY confused by dude’s accent (since I was pretty sure Knuckle Puck is from IL). I made my way as close as possible during Knuckle Puck, and when all their fans left I was able to get right on the barrier for Bayside. There were two younger security guards who were super nice, and seemed to actually enjoy the music. They did a little dance to the music The Lawrence Arms came out to (the rocky song? I liked how they came out to Salt & Pepa two years ago), it was cute.

There were some diehard Bayside fans near me, who I think I remember from 350 Fest last year. They were super outgoing (and maybe a little drunk) and got everyone near us talking which helped pass the time between sets. One of them was really nice and she vowed to protect my glasses / me during Bayside’s set lol. I’m still so happy they were near me because there was a group of a few girls that were talking and one was a doctor, one was working on her phd, and one was a fellow biologist. It just made me super happy and a little bit inspired to see some fellow lady STEM Bayside fans. Not surprised that Bayside has so many brilliant fans tbh :P.

Bayside’s set was amazing and I was really glad they ended with two songs not from The Walking Wounded. If I remember correctly, they ended their self titled set two years ago with the last song from the album, and it didn’t feel right. Next was The Lawrence Arms which was also amazing. I felt a little bad being right on the barrier though because I’m not 100% familiar with all their songs. But it was a great time and yes, I still think Chris is creepy cute. Something about seeing The Lawrence Arms WHILE being in Chicago makes me feel all tingly inside.

After The Lawrence Arms I was starving so I got some food (taco in a bag), got water, hit the bathroom and changed my shirt (I was very sweaty and glad I brought an extra shirt), and caught the end of Mike D’s set, which was super cool. Then I sat and watched a little of At the Drive in. I left after only a few songs because my anxiety was getting crazy. I’m a little bummed that I missed Queens of the Stone Age because of it, but it’s not too big a deal. 

Train home was uneventful. When I got home I stuffed my face, showered, and passed out.

Sunday

Got up, got ready, left the house early to try to buy sunscreen and a poncho. The ponchos were too expensive so I skipped it and hoped for the best (a good decision). Since I didn’t buy the poncho and I was fine the day before I decided against buying sunscreen (a bad decision). Train was boring and I got to Douglas Park right on time, and it was fucking HOT. I don’t know if I was just over dressed or if it was the lack of sunscreen, but I felt like I was melting. So I found shade and sat in the grass before Beach Slang. Watched a few Beach Slang songs, then made my way over to wait for Hot Water Music (and find some shade!). Beach Slang were interesting. Decent music (another band to check out later) and sometimes funny on stage, but mostly I felt second hand embarrassment lol. Hot Water Music were great! I’m really happy I finally got to see them. I wish they played more from Caution though, cause that’s my jam. I need to get my hands on their new album. 

Thankfully it was around this time that it got all cloudy and I was starting to feel like a human being again, so I got a cool beer and made my way over to watch That Dog. This is a band I knew nothing about, but they seem like a band I’d really like (love me some lady bands) so they are another I plan to revisit. Made my way to The Radicals stage for Say Anything (my first time seeing them!) and the Menzingers. That first beer got me slightly tipsy, and I decided to get another so I’d be nice and happy for The Menzingers. This was a good idea because their crowd was CRAZY. 

After being on the barrier for two bands the day before my arms were bruised and sore. I think I had just enough alcohol to numb the pain since I ended up being squished against people and moved all around for The Menzingers. Before they started there was a security guard throwing water bottles into the crowd and of course I got hit with one lmao. It hit my beer and got beer all over my shirt and on the left side of my glasses, which later, I almost lost to a crowd surfer. It was a blast! Highlights for me were the songs from Rented World, since that was the album that got me into them. It was cute when they said that they thought this was their biggest crowd ever. They deserve all the love.

After The Menzingers I got water, which I very much needed, hit the bathroom, caught some of the Flatliners before I decided I really had to eat (got a burger and regretted it tbh. I’ve had better burgers at like, Bdubs.) Then made my way over for Minus the Bear. I was a little salty during their set because they remind me of the boy, and there were a lot of couples near me. I was hoping I’d get to hear my summer anthem (Throwin’ Shapes) live, but they didn’t play it. Walked over and sat and watched/listened to TV on the Radio and talked to some guy from Seattle who was there with friends. Wish I felt more comfortable talking with big groups of people, they were nice. Next was MIA, who came out late. I REALLY wanted to hear Bad Girls, but left after a few songs to get a decent spot for JAWBREAKER.

Caught some Prophets of Rage while waiting for Jawbreaker, which I actually enjoyed more than I thought I would. They did a nice tribute to Chris Cornell, playing Like a Stone and letting the crowd do the vocals.

Then it was time for Jawbreaker! Not gonna lie, I’ve only been into them for like two months, but I was so stoked. Plus seeing them reunite and knowing how they have influenced so many bands I like was really cool. Highlights were everything from Dear You lol, since that is THE album (for me at least), and the surprises of them playing Million and Want (which weren’t on their practice setlists from this year, if I recall correctly).

I saw a tweet that said even though they were a headliner it still felt intimate, and I totally agree with that! It was just really powerful to see everyone in the crowd losing it (a guy near me summed it up perfectly when after a song he shouted “I’m not crying, you’re crying!”). And all those people on the stage! I’ve never seen so many people on the stage for a headliner before. It was amazing. I felt like I was witnessing / a part of something historic.

I’m really glad I didn’t let my anxiety get the better of me, because after Saturday I was questioning whether I’d be comfortable enough to even stay for Jawbreaker. Overall, I had a blast and it was definitely worth the money and the stress.
